Star gazing; Snowdonia National Park is a fantastic place to go out and enjoy the night sky. On a clear night you can see the milky way, all the main constellations, shooting stars, nebulas and planets.


Did you know ..... Snowdonia was designated an international Dark Sky Reserve in 2016. It was one of only twelve such reserves worldwide, and Wales is the country with the highest percentage of its skies designated with an International Dark sky status in the WORLD.

Here is a list of some of the best places for a spot of stargazing in Snowdonia.

  • Here at The Haybarn Not quite as dark as some of the below, but we have spent many a night wrapped up with a hot chocolate star gazing.

  • Llynn y Dywarchen  4.2 miles (route map) is located above the village of Drws y Coed in Dyffryn Nantlle, near Rhyd Ddu. It is a very popular fishing lake. It has a car park for up to 6 cars nearby.

  • Ty Cipar,y Migneint   6.4 miles (route map) Near a secluded former gamekeepers house on the B4407 moorland road between Llan Ffestiniog and Ysbyty Ifan, within the special protected Area of Migneint and Arenig Dduallt. It is also one of the largest areas of blanket bog in Wales, and birds such as the Hen Harrier,Peregrine and Merlin can be spotted here.  Facilities Parking for four cars.

  • Llyn Geirionydd  20.6 miles  (route map) A very popular lake in the Gwydir Forest above Betws y coed. It is the only lake in Snowdonia where you can use power boats and water ski. In the summer it is very popular for picnickers. There is a car park on the lake's shore, and toilets available during the summer.
